Over the weekend, a young girl was attacked by a sizable, rabid beaver as she was swimming in a lake in Georgia.

According to local radio station WDUN-AM and ABC affiliate WSB-TV, the woman was bitten in the leg by the large beaver while she was at Lake Lanier in the Sardis region on Saturday.

According to WSB-TV, the event took place nearby on a piece of private property.

According to Kevin Buecker, the field supervisor for Hall County Animal Control, the girl’s father eventually interfered and killed the beaver with blunt force.

It was confirmed to PEOPLE by Melissa Cummings of Georgia’s Department of Natural Resources that the father of the beaver killed the animal following the attack.

The victim’s identify and state of health have not been made public.

The Hall County government posted a warning on its Facebook page on Tuesday informing the public that the beaver had tested positive for rabies.

Access WDUN received confirmation of the positive test results from Joy Holmes, Hall County’s public information officer. The request for response from PEOPLE was not immediately answered by Holmes.

Beavers, in this case, become irrational after the rabies virus enters their brains, according to McGowan, who spoke to WSB-TV.

According to the National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute of the Smithsonian Institution, beavers are the biggest rodents to be found in the United States and can weigh between 35 and 65 lbs.

According to WSB-TV, DNR Wildlife Resources Supervisor Don McGowan estimated that the beaver engaged in the attack on Saturday in Georgia weighed between 50 and 55 lbs.

The Hall County government announced that signs alerting the public to the positive test “will be posted in the area where the rabid animal was located.”
