Meet William Kyle Carpenter, an extraordinary individual who exemplifies true heroism. At just 21 years old, he achieved the rank of Lance Corporal in the US Marines and was deployed to Afghanistan in 2010 to serve in the war.

During a fierce battle, Carpenter and his fellow Marine found themselves in the midst of combat when a grenade suddenly landed nearby. In a split-second decision, Carpenter’s bravery shone through as he selflessly threw himself on top of the grenade to shield his comrade from the imminent danger.

This courageous act had a profound impact on Carpenter’s life. The explosion caused severe injuries that would alter the course of his future. Shrapnel tore through his body, leaving him with broken bones in his skull and face. His jaw was partially missing, and one of his lungs collapsed. Tragically, upon his return to Camp Bastion, he was declared as “P.E.A” – a patient who expired upon arrival.

Carpenter’s road to recovery was not an easy one. Over the next two years, he underwent an astounding forty surgeries to repair the damage caused by the blast. Through it all, his strength and determination never wavered.

His unwavering courage and sacrifice did not go unnoticed. Carpenter was honored with the prestigious Purple Heart and the Medal of Honor by President Obama. These accolades served as a testament to his indomitable spirit and his extraordinary service to his country.

Today, Carpenter is no longer serving in the military. Instead, he is pursuing his studies at the University of South Carolina. He continues to inspire and remind us of the selflessness and bravery that lies within the hearts of everyday heroes.
