According to court documents, 33-year-old Ruben Montanez-Mirabal was sentenced on Wednesday in Miami federal court. In March, he entered a guilty plea to arranging to receive bribes and bringing illegal items into a federal prison.

A criminal complaint claims that from November 2021 to August 2022, Montanez-Mirabal received illicit payments from FDC Miami detainees in exchange for bringing in and transferring to them illegal items, including sheets of paper covered in synthetic cannabis. Thousands of dollars in bribes as well as other valuables, such as the free use of a Lamborghini and a Rolls-Royce, were taken by Montanez-Mirabal, according to the prosecution.

Over several months, Montanez-Mirabal allegedly smuggled more than 100 drug-laced pages, which he either gave to prisoners directly or hid wherever they could discover them later, according to authorities. According to officials, the prisoners would charge $1,500 per page for the medicines.
