Shane MacGowan

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Shane MacGowan, the legendary frontman and songwriter of The Pogues. Shane, aged 65, had been battling illness for some time. His wife, Victoria Mary Clarke, beautifully expressed her love for him, saying, “Shane will always be the light that I hold before me and the measure of my dreams.”

In a heartfelt statement shared on social media, The Pogues wrote, “It is with the deepest sorrow and heaviest hearts that we announce the passing of Shane MacGowan. Shane died peacefully at 3 am this morning with his wife Victoria and family by his side.”

Shane had been undergoing treatment at St Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin for several months. However, on 22nd November, he was discharged and returned home to spend quality time with his loved ones.

Shane MacGowan was an iconic figure in the Irish punk scene of the 1980s. He led The Pogues, a band that captured the hearts of millions with their unique style and rebellious spirit. Among their many hits, “Fairytale Of New York,” released in 1987, remains an all-time favorite, especially during the festive season.

Sharing her profound grief on Instagram, MacGowan’s wife, Victoria Mary Clarke, wrote, “There’s no way to describe the loss that I am feeling and the longing for just one more of his smiles that lit up my world.”
