Imagine going from being a tenant to becoming a property owner in the blink of an eye. This is exactly what happened to 75-year-old Jane Sayner from St. Albans, Melbourne, Australia.

For over twenty years, Jane had been renting a two-bedroom apartment from her landlord, the late John Perrett. Paying a steady AUD$250 in rent per week, Jane had always been a reliable and responsible tenant. However, when John passed away in September 2020, she was uncertain about the future. Who would inherit the house? And who would be her new landlord? The fear of potential changes loomed over her.

But to her surprise and relief, nothing of that sort happened. Jane, along with another long-term tenant of Perrett’s, was bequeathed their respective apartments. Overnight, Jane went from being a tenant to a delighted property owner. It was a dream come true.

John Perrett, a generous and kind-hearted individual, had never been married nor had any children. He didn’t even have any close relatives. As fate would have it, a significant portion of his enormous fortune, amounting to approximately AUD$18.6 million, went to the Royal Melbourne Hospital’s Nephrology Department. Perrett had undergone a life-changing kidney transplant, and he wanted to express his gratitude by giving back.

Furthermore, Perrett had also willed one of his flats to the hospital, which was later sold for AUD$400,000. His selflessness and commitment to helping others were truly remarkable.

Jane fondly recalls the moment when she received the news. “Then one day he just rang me and said, ‘My solicitor’s here, can you please give me your full name because I’m leaving you your unit.’ I thought I hadn’t heard it right. Surely not. For the whole time I had known him, leaving all his money to charity was always what he was going to do.”

While Jane still mourns the loss of her dear friend and landlord, she is immensely grateful for the unexpected turn of events. Having her own place brings her a sense of security and permanence. Over the years, she had treated the apartment like her own, taking care of the garden and adding her personal touch with beautiful plants and flowers.

Jane’s story is a testament to the power of relationships and the impact one person can have on another’s life. John Perrett saw in Jane not just a tenant, but a friend. And his final act of generosity has forever changed her life.
