A joyful family gathering

At 98 years young, MaeDell Taylor Hawkins, the matriarch of a large Kentucky family, experienced a heartwarming moment when she met her first great-great-great-grandchild, seven-month-old Zhavia Whitaker. This tender encounter was captured in a photo shared online by her granddaughter, Gracie Snow Howell, and it quickly captured the hearts of many.

MaeDell has an incredible 620 grandchildren, which include the children of her own daughters and the children of their children. Truly remarkable, isn’t it? As MaeDell held baby Zhavia in her arms, surrounded by four generations of strong women, the moment became even more special. Granddaughters Gracie, Frances, Jacqueline, and Jaisline stood by her side, creating a snapshot of love and family unity.

MaeDell’s journey hasn’t been an easy one. At the age of 16, she married a 50-year-old railroad worker, Bill Taylor. Despite the challenges they faced, including raising 13 children without modern amenities like running water or a washer and dryer, MaeDell never complained. Her resilience and unwavering love have shaped generations of joyful, healthy women and children.

Gracie fondly recalls her childhood, never hearing her own mother, Frances, utter a single complaint about their humble home. The absence of material wealth was overshadowed by the abundance of love and support MaeDell provided to her family. It’s no wonder that MaeDell’s legacy lives on, evident in the joy and unity found in this multigenerational photograph.

Looking to the future, Gracie shared her excitement about another family gathering in June. If all goes well, they plan to capture yet another precious moment, celebrating the well-being of baby Zhavia and the remarkable spirit of their beloved grandma.

Outside of Kentucky, MaeDell has an impressive 37 great-great-great-grandchildren. Within the state, she is blessed with 106 grandchildren, 222 great-grandchildren, and 234 great-great-grandchildren. The depth of her family’s love knows no bounds, extending across generations and geographical distance.

Reflecting upon MaeDell’s journey, it is truly astonishing to fathom the challenges she overcame while raising such a large and loving family. In a world where resources were scarce, she nurtured a legacy of compassion and resilience that continues to inspire us all.
