In a rare public appearance, Jimmy Carter attended the funeral service for his beloved wife, Rosalynn Carter, clad in a dark suit and tie. Having declined further medical attention, the former president had checked himself into hospice care earlier this year. He stayed by Rosalynn’s side until her final moments.

At Atlanta’s Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church, Carter sat in his wheelchair, flanked by his children. Before the tribute began, his grandson, Jason Carter, provided an update on his grandfather’s health that left many with a heavy heart. It seems that the 39th President of the United States may not be with us for much longer.

Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter’s love story traces back to their childhood in Plains, Georgia. They spent most of their lives together, so it was only fitting that they were together during Rosalynn’s last hours. Her passing at the age of 96 was not unexpected, but it has prompted an outpouring of celebration for her remarkable life.

Rosalynn passed away on November 19 at 2:10 p.m. in her Plains, Georgia home. Even after her time in the White House alongside her husband from 1977 to 1981, she continued to serve as a humanitarian through the Carter Centre.

Unfortunately, both Jimmy and Rosalynn’s health had been on the decline over the past year. Jimmy Carter chose to forego further medical assistance and opted for hospice care in February. Now, with Rosalynn’s departure, many believe that Jimmy’s health could rapidly deteriorate.

Before Rosalynn’s burial ceremony, Jason Carter, in an interview with the New York Post, seemed to confirm these fears. “He’s getting close to the end, and his physical state has greatly diminished,” he revealed. “She really was that rock for him, but he has been this moral rock for so many others.”

During the poignant memorial service for Rosalynn, their daughter, Amy Carter, shared a heartfelt letter from Jimmy. It was a letter Jimmy had written to his wife while he was away serving in the Navy. “My sweetheart, each time I’ve been apart from you, I’ve been overjoyed to come back and see how amazing you are,” he wrote. “I fall in love all over again when I see you.”

As we bid farewell to Rosalynn Carter, let us continue to keep the Carter family in our thoughts and prayers.
