In 2003, Melanie Shaha, a resident of Gilbert, Arizona, faced the distressing reality of losing her hair due to a benign brain tumor. Little did she know that an act of love from her own son would help her regain her confidence.

Melanie started experiencing dull headaches, which later turned out to be a result of a pituitary brain tumor. This small gland at the base of the brain plays a vital role in regulating hormones related to metabolism, stress, and growth. Unfortunately, Melanie’s tumor affected the functionality of her pituitary gland.

After undergoing surgery to remove the tumor, Melanie’s hair loss became an unexpected side effect. When she inquired about it with her doctor, she was met with a surprising answer: hair loss in treated areas is a common side effect of radiation. Losing her hair made Melanie feel self-conscious and drew unwanted attention. She didn’t want to stand out as a reminder of her illness while going about her daily life.

During a family brunch in 2018, Melanie’s 27-year-old son, Matt, came up with an idea that lifted her spirits. Matt had recently finished university, where the dress code prohibited long hair. He had been eagerly growing out his hair, enjoying the newfound freedom. It was during this time that “something clicked” for him.

Not wanting to further burden his mother, Matt came up with a creative solution. Whenever Melanie complimented his hair, he would respond, “Coming soon to a head near you!” The idea planted a seed in Melanie’s mind. What if Matt grew out his hair so she could have a wig made from it?

By March 21, Matt’s hair had reached a length suitable for wig-making—12 inches. He gathered a few coworkers and headed to his mother’s house, armed with scissors and love. As they began to cut Matt’s hair, tears of joy and gratitude flowed freely. It was a beautiful moment for the entire family.

Melanie’s wig was made with care by Compassionate Creations in Newport Beach, California. The family was overjoyed with the result. The wig, with its gorgeous color and professional styling, brought out Melanie’s radiance. Matt couldn’t help but compliment his mother, saying it looked fantastic on her.

Through this selfless act of love, Matt filled Melanie’s emotional tank to the brim. He showed her that even in the face of adversity, there is always a way to support and uplift each other. This wig, woven with love, not only covered her head but also brought back her confidence and ability to blend in, rather than standing out as a reminder of her illness.

Melanie Shaha’s story is a testament to the power of love within a family. It serves as a reminder that even in the toughest of times, small acts of kindness can make a world of difference.
