Nearly 30 premature babies born into Gaza warzone evacuated to Egypt

In a heartwarming and life-saving effort, nearly 30 premature babies born into the warzone of Gaza have been successfully evacuated to Egypt for much-needed medical treatment. With the assistance of Israel, the perilously ill infants were transported across the border at Rafa to hospitals in Egypt.

The coordination of this vital mission, requested by Egypt and the director of the Shifa Hospital, involved UN teams and IDF teams on the ground. The babies, carefully placed in incubators, were moved from the Al-Shifa Hospital to emergency vehicles awaiting them outside. Some were transported by air from Al Arish Airport.

The evacuation was not only a feat of logistical coordination, but also a testament to the humanitarian efforts driven by Israel alongside their fight against Hamas in Gaza. Under the watchful eye of the UN, a fleet of ambulances traversed the border to safely deliver the infants to hospitals in Egypt.

The families of these courageous babies expressed their immense gratitude for the evacuation and praised Egypt as the “best place on earth” for their children’s treatment. One mother, Lubna El-Seik, shared her disbelief at the need for such a rescue mission, saying, “It never occurred to us that the hospital would be targeted, and that those children would have to go through what they went through.” She emphasized the speed and warm reception they received upon arrival.

Families and hospital staff were also evacuated from the Al-Shifa Hospital, leaving behind 259 patients. Israel had claimed that the hospital was serving as a hiding place for a Hamas operation center. To support the fragile premature babies, Israeli incubators were provided as part of the rescue efforts.

‘The IDF remains steadfast in its resolve to assist in the humanitarian efforts in Gaza and its commitment to upholding human dignity and providing aid in times of crisis’, stated Israel.

These incredible evacuation efforts come at a crucial time, as discussions for the release of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza are underway. US President Joe Biden expressed hope for a deal that would secure the release of these hostages. U.S. and Qatari officials are advocating for a five-day pause in fighting to facilitate the release of at least 50 women and children. The release of more hostages would follow.

While the delicate situation between Israel and Hamas continues, the focus remains on preserving human life and providing assistance in times of crisis. The safe evacuation of premature babies from Gaza to Egypt is a powerful reminder of the enduring resilience and compassion shared by nations during tumultuous times.
