Not all parents would want to have a child there during birth, but Duff had a compelling motive for doing so. She discussed the reasons for wanting her son to see the miracle of childbirth firsthand in a recent interview. Continue reading to learn the mind-blowing rationale for her choice. It wasn’t an easy decision for her.

Given that she gave birth to both of her daughters, Banks and Mae, in the privacy of her own house, Hilary Duff has been an outspoken supporter of homebirth. The fact that Duff had her older son, Luca, there while his baby sister, Mae, was being born is even more remarkable.

Duff understood that choosing to give birth at home carried some dangers and that it was a choice that required serious thought and preparation. But for her, the advantages of having her family there at such a significant time far surpassed any possible hazards.

She decided for a home birth with her second child as a result of her first child’s birth experience.

Duff acknowledged that watching The Business of Being Born had influenced her choice to give delivery at home. Duff was feeling quite relaxed about the whole delivery issue when it came to her second child. She wasn’t concerned about having any medical assistance this time around because her first birth with Luca had gone successfully. In fact, she was very certain that having the baby at home was the best option for her expanding family.

“You’re bringing a baby into the world, that’s some of the hardest work anybody can do,” Duff explained. “And they don’t let you have water in the hospital, or food or snacks and you’re about to work the hardest you’ve ever worked to push a baby out.”

Duff wanted to teach her son the miracle of childbirth.

Duff got real about her love for bringing her little ones into the world in the comfort of her own home. “It’s kind of the most hippie-dippy thing about me to have my kids around while I’m birthing,” she admitted with a laugh. But as it turns out, it’s a beautiful experience for the whole family.

For Duff, having Luca present during the birth was an important teaching moment about the strength of women and the miracle of childbirth. “It was kind of important for me because I’m really big on being open and honest with him about how strong women are and what childbirth looks like,” Duff shared.

She also added that her son knows “all about periods and it’s important for me to normalize that conversation with him for all the women that are going to be in his life.” It’s clear that Duff is not only a loving mother, but also a powerful advocate for women’s health and empowerment.
