For their golden wedding anniversary, a Kansas man gave his wife the “perfect” present: nearly 1.2 million sunflowers!

According to ABC affiliate KAKE-TV, Lee Wilson surprised his spouse of 50 years, Renee, with gold fields prior to their special anniversary this month.

The farmer discreetly sowed sunflower seeds earlier this spring on his 80 acres of property close to Pratt, Kansas, hoping they would produce a harvest crop of love.

We’re getting married on August 10th, and you know what a guy gets his girl on the 50th? She always liked sunflowers, and I gave it a lot of consideration, Lee told the station. “I decided that this was the perfect year to plant sunflowers, so I gave her 80 acres of them.”

When Lee and Renee first met as teenagers in high school, their love story grew.

She couldn’t date until she became 16, so when I phoned her on her 16th birthday, we began dating, Lee said. “Our first date was at a roller skating party, an FFA roller skating party in Harper, Kansas.”

In the past 50 years, the Wilsons have become internet sensations, demonstrating that the romantic gesture is meaningful to both the intended receiver and the Internet.

Renee told KAKE-TV, “I felt very special because of that. “A field of sunflowers could not have been a more appropriate anniversary gift.”

With 15,000 sunflowers per acre, there are more than a million of the colorful blossoms, which will be in full bloom for the upcoming few weeks, according to the station.

As well as the happy couple, visitors from all over the state are now flocking to the Wilson’s plot of property on the south side of Highway 54, four miles east of Pratt, to take pictures and celebrate a wonderful love story.
