The musician, who denies any wrongdoing, was sentenced to stand trial in a $13.9 million tax evasion case over ten months prior to the start of the second inquiry.

A second tax fraud prosecution against Shakira is pending in Spain.

The singer, 46, has now been the subject of another inquiry, some ten months after she was told to stand trial in her $13.9 million tax evasion case in the nation.

A Spanish court reportedly announced Thursday that it had opened a new inquiry into the Colombian celebrity about claims of fraud on personal income tax and wealth tax in 2018. According to the Associated Press, the court in the municipality of Esplugues de Llobregat, which is close to Barcelona, claimed it didn’t know how much money was at stake.

According to a translation provided by the Spanish news outlet El Pais, the Barcelona Economic Crimes Prosecutor filed a complaint alleging that Shakira had defrauded the Tax Agency, and the court responded by opening a second case. The prosecutor’s office reportedly filed a case for two alleged tax offences, according to El Periodico, another local publication.

Shakira Facing Second Tax Fraud Case in Spain

A representative for Shakira told PEOPLE in a statement Thursday that she “defends having always acted in accordance with the law and under the advice of the best tax experts. She is now focused on her life as an artist in Miami and is confident that there will be a favorable resolution of her tax issues.”

Additionally, according to her representative, she has not yet received any official notice of the second investigation into the 2018 fiscal year. The speaker kept talking. The singer’s legal team has stated that they “won’t make any comments until they receive notification through the official and legal channels.”

“Shakira must be personally notified at her new address, in strict accordance with the provisions of the Law,” reads the notice. “As it is publicly known, and as the Spanish Treasury was officially notified, she is now residing in Miami.”

According to El Pais, the singer of “Hips Don’t Lie” is scheduled to go on trial for the first case in the fall.

According to AP, if she is found responsible for failing to pay taxes from 2012 to 2014, she may receive an eight-year sentence as well as a sizable fine.

According to Reuters, Shakira turned down a settlement offer made in the case in July 2022 that would have resolved the matter without going to trial. She has denied any wrongdoing, and according to her PR firm, she has paid what she owed plus interest of $3 million, according to the AP.

Spanish authorities gave prosecutors permission to continue their legal proceedings against the celebrity, whose full name is Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, in September 2022.

The location of Shakira’s residence between 2012 and 2014 is a key factor in the first fraud lawsuit against her. Prosecutors will try to show that the performer actually spent the most of the time in Spain, despite the fact that she claims to have spent the majority of the time in her principal property in the Bahamas.

Shakira’s defense stated in documents obtained by El Periodico and El Pais that she spent the majority of her time overseas and didn’t make any deliberate efforts to conceal her income, characterizing any misconceptions as “a difference in criteria.”

The second probe, according to El Pais, has nothing to do with the celebrity’s residence and is instead focused on “some alleged irregularity detected by the Treasury that, in the Prosecutor’s Office’s opinion, may constitute a crime.”

In April, Shakira moved her family from Barcelona to Miami, abandoning the place where her ex-husband, Gerard Piqué, was born and raised in Spain.

The 36-year-old ex-football player for Barcelona and Shakira are parents to two boys: Sasha, 8, and Milan, 10.

The couple reared their children in the beachfront city in Spain’s Catalonia region before announcing their separation in a joint statement in June 2022.

Shakira, who lived in Barcelona for eight years, issued a farewell message on Instagram informing her followers that she was leaving the city in order to begin “a new chapter.”

“I settled in Barcelona to give my sons stability, the same that we are now looking for in another part of the world aside from family, friends, and the sea,” the post’s English translation stated. We began a new chapter in our quest for happiness today.

“Everyone who surfed many waves with me in Barcelona, the city where I learned that without a doubt, friendship is longer than love,” the Grammy Award-winning singer continued.
