Delta CEO Ed Bastian said, “To the passengers on board, please know that your safety is our No. 1 priority — always.”

On Wednesday, June 28, 2023, a Delta Airlines airliner rests on a runway at Charlotte Douglas International Airport in Charlotte, North Carolina after it failed to deploy its landing gear.

According to a post on Delta’s website, a Delta Airlines plane landed without its nose gear operating on Wednesday morning after pilots got a “nose gear unsafe” notification.

Around 7:25 a.m. EDT, the flight departed from the Atlanta airport and made a safe landing in Charlotte, North Carolina, an hour and a half later. There were 96 passengers, three flight attendants, and two other passengers on board the Boeing 717.

The aircraft was successfully landed at CLT with the nose gear up at 8:58 a.m. EDT after a series of maneuvers and continued conversation with CLT air traffic controllers to further troubleshoot the issue, according to a statement from Delta.

According to Delta, during the post-landing evacuation, passengers left all of their bags and personal items on the aircraft, and a bus took them to the terminal. In a message on his LinkedIn site, Delta Airlines CEO Ed Bastian also expressed gratitude and regret for the circumstance.

Since the aircraft’s nose gear failed to deploy, Bastian wrote, “I want to extend my sincere gratitude to the crew of Delta flight 1092 who took such great care of our customers today.” “I’m proud of the professionalism of our crews in safely landing the aircraft. Our crews undergo extensive training for situations like this.”

“To our passengers onboard, please know that your safety is our top priority at all times,” he concluded. We’ve got your back, and our teams are working hard to get you where you’re going as quickly as we can. As always, we appreciate your faith in us.

A team of technical experts is looking into the problem, and flight safety personnel were promptly dispatched to remove the aircraft from the tarmac, according to a statement on the Delta website.

“Delta is assisting the FAA and NTSB investigations fully. The plane was still on CLT runway 36L as the investigation went on Wednesday afternoon, according to the statement.

Later, travelers shared their reactions to the terrifying landing on Twitter.

“So, this just occurred… Without nose gear, we have just landed in Charlotte while on board Delta flight 1092! The pilots expertly landed it, and the staff was outstanding! @Delta,” wrote one person.
