According to authorities, Laura Ilg, 31, called 911 and reported that her 2-year-old son had shot her in the back.

An Ohio toddler accidently shot and killed his mother, who was eight months pregnant, while playing with a gun he allegedly found on his parents’ nightstand.

According to a news release from the Norwalk Police Department, at around 1:15 pm on Friday, 31-year-old Laura Ilg called 911 and said that her 2-year-old son had shot her in the back inside their Norwalk home.

Authorities claim that Ilg’s 28-year-old husband, Alek Ilg, called them shortly after Ilg’s wife allegedly instructed him to do so after “screaming something about my son,” according to the release. At the moment, he was at his job.

When police came, they discovered Ilg with her kid and a loaded semi-automatic weapon in her upstairs bedroom. Ilg was 33 weeks pregnant at the time. Ilg told officers what had transpired and was completely conscious, according to the police.

She was reportedly transported to Fisher-Titus Medical Center, where doctors immediately delivered her by c-section. But Ilg’s unborn child passed away, and around three hours later, Ilg was pronounced dead.

The firearm, which belonged to Ilg’s spouse, was reportedly typically stored in a nightstand in the couple’s bedroom, according to the police.

According to Cleveland 19 News, Ilg informed authorities before she passed away that the room is generally kept shut and that there are several baby gates installed throughout the house. She reportedly said that while she was doing the wash, her son managed to get into the room and begin playing with the gun.

According to the press release, after police searched the house, they discovered two other weapons: an airsoft rifle from a computer room closet and a loaded 12-gauge shotgun in the couple’s bedroom closet.

Police told Cleveland 19 News that the 2-year-old youngster who is still alive is living with his father as they continue to look into how the toddler was able to fire the gun.

Alek Ilg paid tribute to his wife and pregnant child on Facebook following their deaths.

If you didn’t know, Laura and our unborn baby Talisen died on Friday, he said in his message. “The grief and loss I experience are beyond words. She was, is, and always will be my life’s love.

Ilg was characterized in her obituary as a North Carolina native who loved going to church and spending time with her family. According to her obituary, she also loved board games, crafting, and reading, especially Harry Potter.

The Huron County Prosecutor’s Office will be notified of the incident, which police say has not yet resulted in any charges being filed.
