The choice was “her life or her leg.”

Mother of Sydney, Kristal Joseph, believed a spider to be safe until it bit her on the foot.

However, the 29-year-old would have life-saving surgery and lose half of her leg just 12 weeks later.

Callum Joseph, Kristal’s husband, told 7NEWS.com.au, “We didn’t know how she was going to cope without a leg.”

But it had to be her limb or her life.

A series of diseases started after Kristal was bitten by a white-tailed spider back in February.

The bite on her foot rapidly developed into a minor ulcer, which later worsened into a “nasty infection” that eventually “ran rampant.”

Kristal underwent ten debridement procedures in the weeks that followed, each of which involved shaving off more and more of her foot.

She had stage five kidney failure while in intensive care as a result of the infection spreading to her tendons, ligaments, and bone.

Then, Kristal was left with no other choice.

Her life was finally saved by a leg amputation on May 18.

Kristal said to 7NEWS.com.au, “Right now, I’m just trying to get by with life without the leg.”

Kristal noted that she has started to feel phantom aches, which she finds “very strange and difficult to explain.”

She asked, “How can my toes or foot feel cramped?”

However, I am unable to get rid of it for a few agonizing minutes.

Currently, Kristal claims she is dealing with a recovery that will be “slow and steady.”

But she added, “I am more motivated than ever to actually obtain my prosthetics, learn to walk once more, and, ideally, get back to work so that I may live my life as it was meant to be lived.

On May 18, medical professionals amputated a limb. Kristal and her husband Callum Joseph provided the photo. My kids are excited for me to have a prosthetic leg because they think I’m some sort of bionic superwoman. Image from Go Fund Me.

“The entire family has really rallied around us and helped us in any way they can, and I am incredibly appreciative of everything they have done.”

Callum said that since their current home in Sydney’s west, Jordan Springs, is a double storey, they now also have to locate a new place to live.

Nevertheless, in spite of everything, the pair is attempting to live each day as it comes.

With everything going on, she still feels overwhelmed, Callum said.

However, the recovery is progressing well. We continue to visit the hospital frequently, and this will continue for some time.

A family member has started a Go Fund Me page to aid the family at this challenging time.

The page notes that Kristal “never, ever complains despite these significant health challenges.”

She handles these difficulties with bravery and poise. She never stops considering others. She dislikes making a scene, being the center of attention, or requesting assistance.
