Straightness doesn’t have a single appearance. The ‘Abbott Elementary’ actor stated that being gay doesn’t look one way.

The “dangerous message” of speculating about Tyler James Williams’ sexual orientation is being addressed.

The 30-year-old star of Abbott Elementary spoke out on Sunday against people making assumptions about his sexual orientation because to the ongoing harm it does for those who are genuinely unsure of how they identify.

“Normally I wouldn’t talk about things like this, but I think the discourse as a whole is greater than me. Williams wrote on his Instagram Story, “I’m not gay, but I think the culture of trying to ‘discover’ some kind of hidden trait or behavior that a closed person ‘let slip’ is incredibly hazardous.

Many gay and queer-questioning persons experience anxiety because they fear living in their truth, he said. “Overanalyzing someone’s conduct in an effort to ‘catch’ them directly contributes to that. For our homosexual brothers and sisters and others who might be unsure, it makes even the most routine talks and encounters in public feel less secure.

The former star of Everybody Hates Chris said, “It also reinforces an archetype many straight men have to live under that is frequently unrealistic, less free, and restricts individual expressing.”

The actor then said that he utilizes his position “to push against those preconceptions every chance that I get,” adding, “Being straight doesn’t look one way. It doesn’t appear one way to be gay.

He added, “And what may appear like innocent discussion and enjoyment may actually be conveying a dangerous message to individuals dealing with true problems. “I won’t unintentionally support that message,”

The Golden Globe winner wishes “Happy Pride to all of my queer and questioning brothers, sisters, and people.” I pray that during this month’s celebration, you experience being noticed in ways that make you feel protected.

He ended his letter with a white heart emoji and said, “As an ally, I continue to be committed to helping in that where I can and helping to cultivate a future where we are all accepted and given permission to be ourselves.”

Williams first became well-known for his lead part in Everybody Hates Chris, but since then, his depiction as teacher Gregory Eddie on the ABC sitcom Abbott Elementary has drawn even more notice. This performance also won him his first Golden Globe.

ABC decided to give Abbott Elementary a third season in January 2023. On Hulu, the first two seasons are currently streaming.
